What is in the shapes worksheet pack
- Trace the shapes — dotted circles, squares, triangles, rectangles, ovals, stars and hearts to trace, then draw independently.
- Name that shape — match shape names to pictures.
- Sides and corners — count the sides and corners (vertices) of triangles, squares, pentagons, hexagons and octagons.

- 2D and 3D shapes — match flat shapes to solid shapes: circle to sphere, square to cube, triangle to pyramid, rectangle to rectangular prism, circle to cylinder and cone faces.
- Shapes around us — find shapes in a clock, a door, a pizza slice, a stop sign and more.
- Shape flash cards and answer keys.
Shape facts for young learners
| Shape | Sides | Corners | Everyday example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Circle | 0 | 0 | Round; every point on the edge is the same distance from the centre |
| Triangle | 3 | 3 | Three straight sides |
| Square | 4 | 4 | Four equal sides and four right angles |
| Rectangle | 4 | 4 | Four right angles; opposite sides equal |
| Pentagon | 5 | 5 | Five sides |
| Hexagon | 6 | 6 | Six sides, like a honeycomb cell |
| Octagon | 8 | 8 | Eight sides, like a stop sign |
| Rhombus | 4 | 4 | Four equal sides, not always right angles |
| Trapezoid | 4 | 4 | At least one pair of parallel sides (US definition) |
| Oval | 0 | 0 | Stretched circle shape |
Circles and ovals have no straight sides and no corners. A square is a special rectangle with all four sides equal. In the US, a trapezoid is often defined as having at least one pair of parallel sides.
How shapes learning develops
Young children first recognise shapes as whole pictures — “that looks like a door, so it is a rectangle”. With experience they begin to notice properties: number of sides, corners, and whether sides are straight or curved. Kindergarten standards commonly ask children to name shapes regardless of size or orientation, describe them using words such as sides and corners, and compare 2D and 3D shapes. The worksheets move through that progression: trace and name, then count and describe, then sort and compare.
Hands-on shape activities
- Build shapes with craft sticks or straws and play dough corners.
- Go on a shape hunt around the home or classroom and tally what you find.
- Make shape pictures — a house from a square and a triangle, a robot from rectangles and circles.
- Use a feely bag with wooden blocks: describe a shape by touch before naming it.
- Turn a triangle upside down or sideways and ask if it is still a triangle (yes!).
Who it is for
Preschool, pre-K and kindergarten children, with some pages suitable for first-graders reviewing geometry. Parents, teachers, tutors and homeschooling families can use the pages for centres, homework and morning work. Instructions are short and picture-based for pre-readers.
Formats
Worksheets are print-ready PDFs (US Letter; they print on A4) and editable Word files. Flash cards print six per page. All pages are black-and-white friendly for colouring.
Talking about shapes with young children
Language grows alongside shape knowledge, so talk about shapes throughout the day. Use precise words — side, corner, curved, straight, flat, solid — and invite children to explain: “How do you know it is a triangle?” Turn shapes to different orientations so children learn that a triangle is still a triangle upside down, and show long, thin and irregular triangles as well as the familiar equilateral one. Counting sides and corners with a finger connects shapes to early number skills.
